AGATE: Agate is banded micro crystalline quartz, and can be found in a variety of colours. They are very powerful healing stones. Excellent for use around the Solar Plexus and Sacral Chakra. It encourages truthfulness in its wearer, and attracts true and loyal friendships. It also improves self worth and vitality. Agate is good for toning and strengthening the mind and body. It is grounding and energetic. Blue Lace Agate is good for releasing the fear of death, and oppressive burdens, and the immune system. Be careful of brightly coloured agates, as they may have been dyed, and should be avoided.

Types include : Blue Lace, Botswana, Dendritic, Ellensburg Blue, Fire, Iris, Moss, Plume, Picture and Snakeskin.

AMBER: Amber is the fossilized resin of pine trees. Very good for depression, soothing, grounding and harmonizing. Absorbs toxins

AMETHYST: Enhances third eye activity, is a blood cleanser and toner, and has a calming effect which assists with creative thinking. It assists in deciphering dreams, and in calming those with nightmares. It balances and soothes an over-active mind, and helps to calm and centre the mind. It is also rumoured to assist in helping protect against drunkenness as well.

APACHE TEARS: Apache Tears are small, dark, smoky-translucent Obsidian pebbles. They can ease and release pain, loss, sadness, anger and to help heal and go on with life. Very useful for looking within and protection. Gently grounds and unblocks lower body and endocrine glands and chakras. Aids healing.

AQUAMARINE: Aquamarine is normally light blue to blue in colour, and sometimes contains greenish aspects. It is a member of the beryl family. Assists the mind's surrender to the higher spiritual energies, stills the mind during meditation and calms for sleep with inspired dreams. Tranquillizing, uplifting, openness, innocence, light heartedness, creativity, communication, self-awareness, confidence, purpose. It affects etheric and mental levels. Releases anxiety, fear and restlessness.

AVENTURINE: Aventurine is usually green with sparkly inclusions of hematite or mica, and is a member of the quartz family. It purifies the mental, emotional, and etheric bodies. It aids in releasing anxiety and fear. Strengthens the blood and stimulates muscle tissue. Historically also draws out heat of fevers, inflammation, nerve. system stress. It heals the heart by releasing emotional stress, thus allowing reuniting of the healthy heart and soul.

AZURITE: Azurite is a deep royal blue, and can even have some purple.. Often spherical in shape. Stimulates psychic powers and inspirations, and improves visuals in meditation. Activates spleen and thyroid while strengthening the etheric body, dissolving darkness. Hi copper content stimulates thyroid, sinus, skin cleansing, spleen, nervous system, mental and etheric bodies.

BLOODSTONE: Also sometimes known as Heliotrope. It is opaque, dark green chalcedony sprinkled with red jasper. Grounds and cleanses the physical body and helps with all blood disorders. Provides mental balance and increases courage. Classic for wealth, menstrual cramps, anaemia, blood clots, haemorrhoids, birthing/reproductive ability, imbalance. Cleansing heart and blood circulation, marrow, thymus, lungs and heart.

CALCITE: Calcite is found in many colours. There are almost 700 varieties of calcite. Major ones include: Red: Base or Solar Plexus Chakra. Provides a safe, open space for emotions. Absorbs negative emotions that are unbalancing the chakras. Gold: Navel or Crown Chakra. Good for meditation, and mental alertness Green: Heart Chakra. Balances and calms. Clarifies visions, imagery, astral travel and recall. Honey: Solar Plexus Chakra. Stimulates kidneys to remove body toxins and also assists with action. Helpful during intense periods of change. Pink: Heart Chakra. Helps heal the heart of emotional pain and trauma. Uplifting energy. Blue: Throat Chakra. Helps calm and balance mental levels. Eases pain (especially in the back) Clear: Crown Chakra mainly. Alleviates fear and reduces stress. Use in meditation to help ground excess energies.

CARNELIAN: Carnelian is a type of Chalcedony which is translucent and can be red, orange, yellow or dark brown in colour. Enhances motivation, mental clarity, memory, meditation, communication, courage, and concentration. Also good for lower back problems, lungs, blood disorders, depression, and for cleansing organs and aiding tissue regeneration.

CHALCEDONY (white): Porous and therefore often dyed. Natural white chalcedony has no layering or banding. Chalcedony encourages the expression of emotional needs. It brings calmness and peace. Promotes emotional honesty and the expression of feelings you usually smother. Assists when grieving. Balances and soothes emotions.

CHRYSOCOLLA: Chrysocolla is an opaque blue-green hydrous copper silicate, and often found with malachite and/or azurite. It can also look a lot like turquoise. This stone releases stress and is balancing to the emotions and the mind. It strengthens the lungs and thyroid and reduces anger and fear. It is also excellent for female problems, and to activate feminine qualities. .

CHRYSOPRASE: Chrysoprase is a bright translucent apple-green chalcedony. It helps with greater flexibility, wisdom, generosity and self-confidence. Heals depression, excess self-focus and emotional/sexual imbalance. It provides a sense of continuity when you move forward into the unknown. Enlivens insight for resolution of personal problems, increases selflessness and love in actions.

CITRINE: Citrine is a variety of quartz found mainly in a pale golden yellow as well as darker shades, and is actually Amethyst that has been heated in the earth's crust. This mineral increases awareness and control of mind and emotions. It enhances digestion and improves circulation of blood. Also good for problem-solving, memory, willpower, optimism, confidence, self-discipline and digestion. Reduces anxiety, fear, depression, stomach tension, food disorders, allergies. Detoxifies the spleen, kidneys and liver.

EPIDOTE: Epidote is found in deep green clusters as well as single and doubly pointed crystals. Looks a bit like green tourmaline. Enhances your spiritual path. For those already on the path, it will act as a catalyst for going deeper. Strengthens over all health, heart, well-being, energy. Assists courage and stamina. Helps the wearer take good care of their body.

FLUORITE: Fluorite comes in a variety of colours including violet, blue, yellow, pink green and clear. This mineral brings higher realities into the physical plane and balances mental energies. Good for meditation. It actualises, increases life forces and expands mental power. Important balancer, healer.

FOSSILS: Even though this a very wide subject to place into only one category, it is still worth mentioning. Due to the strong life-force that is preserved inside fossils, holding fossils and meditating can be very uplifting when this stored energy is tapped. They also provide a natural link for those wishing to develop conscious bonding with the animal kingdom.

GARNET: Garnet comes in a variety of colours, but is best known in the transparent deep red variety. Also comes in red brown, yellow brown, green, black and pinkish red. Warms and energizes emotionally and physically. Enhances strength, endurance, self-esteem, imagination, creativity, meditation, patience and compassion. Aids circulation, depression, thyroid, toxicity and nightmares.

HEMATITE: It is an iron rich mineral that comes mainly in a red-rust colour naturally, and is like a black-grey mirror when polished. One of the most grounding of all stones. Condenses scatteredness, fuzziness into mental clarity, concentration, memory, practicality, helps study, bookkeeping, detail work, sound sleep. Confidence, will power, boldness. Excellent for stress.

JADE: Jade is used to name two different crystals. Nephrite (yellow/green and uniform in colour) and Jadeite (can be spotted or striped and is harder than Nephrite). It enhances peace serenity, wisdom, memory, emotional balance, clarity and removes negative energy. Jade is a focused, calm balance and excellent in past-life and dream-work. Also good for emotional balancing, kidneys, heart, lungs, thymus and immune system. Health, wealth, longevity stone.

JASPER: Jasper is an opaque form of chalcedony, and comes in the colours red, green, grey, ochre, orange and brown. Jasper stimulates the sense of smell, promotes general healing, tissue regeneration, mental processes, endurance and stimulation of the immune system. The placement and effect varies with the colour. It works over long periods of time and works well with Opal.

KUNZITE: Kunzite is normally a striated crystal of pinkish-purple colour and a high lithium content. It can also come in clear and green colours. This mineral is a regenerative agent for the cardiovascular system, opens the heart love in a balanced way, connects one to the highest life and love forces and promotes soul unification. It provides stress relief from emotional traumas with meditation. Strengthens healers, teachers. Opens the emotional heart and spiritual heart. Helps with unconditional lovingness, compassion, emotional balance, confidence, connection to higher self, oneness. Reduces depression, mood swings, stress.

LAPIS LAZULI: Lapis Lazuli is actually a crystal made up of a number of other crystals, including lazurite, pyrites, sodalite, calcite and micas to name a few. It is the lazurite quantity that determines its quality, and the amount of golden pyrites that increases its value. It is normally medium to dark blue in colour with spots of white and/or gold. This crystal enhances creative expression, thought amplification, psychic awareness, courage, intellect, enlightenment and balances on all levels. It also aids the respiratory system, nervous system, immunity levels, depression, thyroid, nervousness, eyesight, and stomach pain. This stone should not be worn continuously for long periods, even for all day. Lapis Lazuli was also a sacred stone for the Egyptians.

LODESTONE: Lodestone is a metallic black iron oxide. It is also magnetic and as such is sometimes called Magnetite. Related to and works similar to hematite for grounding, clear thinking and focus. It is used to charge pyramids and crystal formations when placed at the corners. Electromagnetically pulls toxic blocks and pain from energy meridians, pancreas and lower glands. It also assists in the release of emotional trauma and increases resistance to disease and stress. It relieves stress related to leaving behind the old ways and moving into something new.

MALACHITE: A layered, opaque, green stone. It contains some copper, hence the intense green tones. It will lose its sheen by being soaked in salt water. Cleanse by smudging with sandalwood or sage incense. It is an intense stone, and an excellent drawer of mental, emotional and physical blocks. Helps you break free from limitations, and access clairvoyant abilities. Good for using to draw out pain of injuries, wounds, toothache, and aids tissue regeneration.

MOONSTONE: Moonstone is a translucent, milky stone, which comes in the colours of peach, yellow, grey, colourless and blue. Moonstone is a true balancer of emotions. Soothes stress, anxiety, women's hormones and menstrual imbalance, lymph, pituitary gland, digestive system, obesity, and water retention. Enhances intuition, sensitivity, psychic abilities, friendship, loyalty, sleep, confidence and helps handle personal feelings. Assists with greater flexibility and flow with life.

OBSIDIAN: Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass, and is most often found in black or snowflake, but is also found in varieties of green, mahogany and aqua-blue. Black (Apache Tears) Snowflake: Base Chakra. A lighter approach to exploring your depths. The black and white represents Yin/Yang. Green: Heart Chakra. Very useful in personal meditation. Mahogany: Base and Solar Plexus Chakra. Provides continuity of energy flow. Helps release anger and activate a positive sense of power.

ONYX: Onyx is actually a black and white banded variety of agate. It balances and grounds, absorbs and flattens emotional intensity. Enhances strength (both mental and physical), concentration, devotion, self control and happiness. Good for teeth, bone marrow, stress, depression, and the balance of sexual impulses and male/female polarities because of its androgynous nature.

OPAL: Colours can be white, grey, black background with flashes of red, orange, yellow, green, blue and pink. Opals will work well with the emotional, mental, spiritual and etheric bodies. Its focus is to clear and build. It enhances intuition, inspiration, imagination, creativity, memory, psychic awareness and moderation of greed. It aids in the treatment of the eyesight, lungs, pineal and pituitary glands and the heart. It should not be used by the impure of heart.

Chakras: Because it carries the full spectrum of colours, it can be used on each chakra.

PYRITE: Pyrite is also known as Iron Pyrites as well as Fool's Gold with a brassy golden appearance. It occurs in cubed chunks, and rarely as flat circular plates, sometimes called "sand dollars". It is one of the most grounding stones in use today. Use for focus, practicality, logic, memory and clearing fuzzy thinking and scatteredness. It seems to stimulate the entire cardiovascular system (circulation, heart, oxygen supply) and impact on the throat area hints at help with communication and a friendly exchange of words.

CLEAR QUARTZ: Quartz crystals reflect pure white light, and are probably the most powerful, widely used, and versatile of the crystals. The light can be focused to use in a variety of ways, including to dispel negativity, healing, overcoming exhaustion, the immune system, glands, shock, burns, slowing bleeding, curing giddiness, overcoming anxiety, stimulating brain functions, and balancing emotions. They can also be used to contact your spirit guides.

ROSE QUARTZ: This is the pink variety of quartz and is also often called "the Love Stone". Colour ranges from milky pale pink to deep lavender pink, and this is caused by manganese or titanium oxides. It helps a person be more open and receptive to the beauty and love in everything, including others as well as themselves. Assists with love of self, self esteem, forgiveness, acceptance, confidence, imagination, intellect, personal expression and reduces stress, as well as assisting with the reproductive organs, scar tissue, fertility, kidneys and circulatory system. It promotes love, forgiveness and compassion.

RUTILATED QUARTZ: This is the form of quartz that contains gold or silver coloured needle like inclusions of the mineral rutile. Rutilated quartz assists with inspiration, problem solving, life force, stability, insight, depression and energy. It aids regeneration of tissues, strengthens the immune system, deals with respiratory problems and enhances communication with the Higher Self. It is also a very powerful healer and can move healing energy faster along the physical chakras than clear quartz.

SMOKY QUARTZ: This is a variety of quartz that has a distinct clear smoky colouring of chocolate brown to brownish black. It enhances channelling, dream awareness, mood elevation, relaxation, creativity and emotional balancing. It helps with depression, negative emotions, cleansing the organs, fertility, nervous system, lower torso problems, and muscle tissue.

TOURMALINATED QUARTZ: This is a form of clear quartz that includes black tourmaline crystals. It helps with the balance of male and female energies, self confidences and meditation. It deals with negative emotions, chakra blockages, nervousness, as well as the lymphatic, endocrine and digestive systems.

RHODONITE: Rhodonite is a common mineral that occurs in pink, reddish pink or brown with veins of black manganese oxides. This mineral reduces emotional imbalance as it blends the heart pink with the dark root chakra colours. Also helps one to achieve self-actualisation and it improves the sense of hearing as it is a sound sensitive mineral. It assists with memory, tenderness, harmony, body reflexes, incoherency, thyroid, digestion, muscles, bones, pituitary gland, pancreas and the bodies immune system.

SELENITE: Selenite is a crumbly form of gypsum that has white/transparent bladed crystals. It is also sometimes called Halo Rock. It calms nerves, assists mental focus, growth, luck, immunity, Kundalini, concentration, reconciliation and energy. Aids in the maintenance of depression, bones, teeth and brain. Selenite also helps to ground white light in the physical body and for protection. Remember that Selenite is fragile, and as such is usually not worn.

SODALITE: Sodalite is a bright blue stone and usually criss-crossed with white and grey line. It is often confused with Lapis Lazuli as it also has pyrites, but has more of a pale violet colour. It can also be found with green tints. It enhances spiritual awareness, communication, mental and visual clarity, balances male and female energies, courage, harmony, objectivity and sleep. Also useful for the metabolism, blood pressure, fear, anxiety, pancreas, emotionally related illnesses and the endocrine and lymphatic systems. General communication and writing stone, helping with logic, ideas and truth. It works well with clear quartz and can be used in place of Lapis Lazuli in healing work.

SUNSTONE: Sunstone is a member of the feldspar family, and is often known as Aventurine feldspar. It is an orange-brown stone with a golden metallic glitter. It helps you move forward when you are feeling blocked on life's paths. It encourages exploration of your possibilities in life, and removes the feeling of being limited in potential. Warms the heart and rejuvenates the spirit. Aids with protection, life force and grounding.

TIGER'S EYE: Tiger's Eye are classified as fibrous quartz, and comes in golden yellow and brown, and looks much improved with cutting and polishing. It boosts self confidence, mental focus, energy centring, optimism, mental clarity, communication and perception, as well as hypochondria, eye diseases, ulcers, stubbornness, spleen, pancreas, digestive organs and blood purification. Use with malachite or pearl for mental or emotional balance and understanding. It is a slightly masculine stone.

TOPAZ: Topaz is found in several main colours including yellow, pink, blue, smoky and colourless. Generally, topaz is excellent for tissue regeneration, emotional balancing, calming and enhancing creativity and understanding. Clear: This stone is uplifting. It assists understanding, especially to do with studying and reading. Gold/Yellow: Helps assimilate new knowledge for use in practical applications. In combination with Citrine, it is excellent for students and researchers. Blue: Similar to clear Topaz, but calmer and more soothing. Smoky: Grounding and stabilizing, and can be used during astral travel to come home comfortably to the physical body.

TOURMALINE: Tourmaline crystals are elongated, heavily streaked and brittle, and come in many colour types, including Verdelite (green), Indicolite (blue), Rubellite (pink), Schorl (black and Achroite (colourless). There are also several types with two colours, such as Watermelon (red and green) and Dravite (brown and black). Green: Heart and Solar Plexus Chakra. Clears emotional pain and confusion as well as soothing worries and calming anxiety. Pink: Heart and Base Chakra. Promotes a detached acceptance. Has an uplifting energy. Releases fear, guilt, grief and sorrow. Black: Base Chakra. Grounding. Very down-to-earth and encourages truthful speaking. It assists in fending off light-headedness when working with other crystals and healing energies. Blue: Throat and Third Eye Chakra. Helps in decision making when you are indecisive about which road to take. Teaches you to value your intuition. Watermelon: Heart Chakra. The combination of green and red/pink tourmaline means it combines the best of the two colours. Use in situation where either red or green tourmaline is needed. Helps balance male and female energies.

TURQUOISE: Turquoise is an opaque copper phosphate, and is rarely found in crystal form. It ranges in colour from sky blue to apple-green to blue-green to a greyish green. It is most often found with veins of limonite, sandstone, jasper, malachite and Chrysocolla. A good general healer for all illnesses and excellent conductor due to the high copper content. This gentle, cool, soothing stone is sacred to the Native Americans. It assists with communication, creativity, serenity, spiritual bonding, uplifting as well as giving and receiving. Symbolizes spiritual love for healing. Enhances peace of mind, psychic abilities, communication, self realization, alignment of chakras, problem solving, headaches, eyes, fever, tissue regeneration, circulation, alcoholism, negativity, nightmares and arthritis.
