Call them Guides, call them Guardian Angels, call them Helpers, whatever works for you. They are those in the spirit world who are there to protect you and guide you through this lifetime, no matter how big or how small the trouble or problem. They've known you for a long time, most of them way before you were even born. Some will be with you for your entire life, and some will 'visit', staying while their particular expertise is needed.
 
There are different types of guides as well. Some are protectors, to make sure you stay safe, some are helpers to guide you in decisions, some are advisors to help your psychic ability, some are experts in several fields, including healing, counselling, and many other mystical arts. They also have different levels of expertise. Maybe you have a major problem? Then you may well get a major guide for a while to help you deal with it.
 
As you get to know them better you may even have nicknames for them. I call mine 'the Guys', and New York medium John Edward (from "Crossing Over") calls his 'the Boys', no matter which gender they are. But this normally forms after you've had time to get to know them a bit better. I've found that a person's guides will reflect their own personality (after all what use would a guide be if you couldn't figure them out?), and they can have a great sense of humour. Above all, know that they are there because they love you. Love in it's purest spiritual form. They see in you the most wonderful things, and they wish to be a part of your journey through this life, for they know it will be worthwhile - even if you do not.

At the same time they are not there to take over your life or run it for you. They will not interfere unless asked specifically. They are there to guide, not to dictate. You have free will and the ultimate power of your life resides with you. Your guides help you through with messages from the Creator, messages from yourself, and observations from a spirit being. They can help you develop psychically, they can help you do readings, they can 'nudge' you into situations and events that will help us grow or meet the person we're supposed to. They can move things around so that you get the job you're meant to, or meet the person who will become your best friend. If you experience an 'amazing coincidence' there's a very good chance it was your guides helping.
 
If you're not sure how to talk to your guides, be assured that they are there and can hear you. Of course we normally do not see them (well most of us anyway) because they reside in a different level of reality. Everything in the Universe vibrates at a different level, and if you vibrate high enough you become invisible to the naked eye. Many Eastern religions talk about this and of 'raising one's vibration level'. But because they are attuned to us, they can hear us when we speak to them or think 'at' them. They are very polite and do not read our thoughts or intrude when they are not wanted (and sometimes privacy is a good thing!). So just talk as though they are standing in front of you, which of course they may be. Normally people only do this in private due to feelings of embarrassment.
 
Hearing your guides speak back to you is a lot harder than speaking to them. I've found that the best way to start is through dreams. Keep a dream diary, and before you go to sleep have a chat with your guides and ask about something troubling you, or it may be a general "what message do you have for me?" enquiry. Then ask they make the message plain and simple in the dream, and allow you to remember it clearly upon waking. Be prepared as I have been 'woken' at 4am before just so I could write down a message dream!
 
Also be aware of your 'gut instinct' and developing your psychic abilities, as the stronger they get, the clearer you will hear your guides. They will often use images, emotions, memories or even physical twinges to get a message across. It's rarely as clear as sitting down with a friend over a cup of tea.
