History of the Runes

Runes date back to the dawn of history, and have been found in one form or another in Europe and the Middle East, but originating in Viking territory. As more people go back to the old ways they are again increasing in popularity as a tool for people to seek guidance.

Runes were used by the Vikings in almost every aspect of their lives. They inscribed runes on their weapons, jewellery, as well as stones. The oldest complete listing of the runes that has been found so far is the Kylver stone, which dates back over 2000 years and was found in Sweden. Remarkably, runes have barely changed since that time, and that includes not only the runes themselves, but their names and probably meanings as well.

If you wish to have your own set of runes, you can either purchase them, or you can make your own. I have in fact made my own set of runes out of clay, as have many people in millennia before me. You can also combine runes if you wish to make a powerful talisman.

Below are links to the 25 runes most used today and their meanings. Either go page by page, by the name, or by the picture guide.
